The most beautiful houses have a unique history behind them. This vacation home is a young couple, UK husband and American wife, who needed a modern update to their home in East Hamptons, a special place to welcome their first child. The young family worked with Décor Aid, a Manhattan-based interior designer who focuses on luxurious, affordable interior design.
Working with designer Alex Caratachea, this East Hampton home was transformed from drab and dated to a posh, luxurious getaway for a brand new family of three. The inspiration for this project – mid-century modern style, glamor and contrasting black and white elements. Throughout the interior, the walls were bright white and the moldings were painted black. The black and white motif that was repeated on the stairs and doors was the starting point for the cool and classic style of this house.
Caratachea paid attention to details and added quality furniture and accessories to the mix. A sofa made of vintage fabric by Miles Redd is found in the living room. The colorful fabric was discovered by the designer of Décor Aid via 1st Dibs, an online hub for antique and modern furniture. Tufted barrel stools were reupholstered in a soft gray. A black and white patchwork rug from ABC Carpet & Home creates a portion of pattern under your feet.
The art shown came from the couple’s own collection. Pieces of friends that have sentimental value.
To complement the house’s colorful sofa, splashes of color have been added with accessories. A turquoise vase by Jonathan Adler goes perfectly with the blue shade of the newly upholstered sofa.
The black and white motif continues in the kitchen of the house. Something the couple saw excitedly. “I love a black and white motif – it’s an icon! When Alex suggested it, we were so excited. From the woman’s point of view: “It started as a real design solution for a house that was weighed down by lots of moldings and intricate doors and archways.” To keep things light and open, Caratachea painted the cabinets a white paint, and the kitchen island has been painted black for a unique contrast.
The high-contrast design continues in the guest bathroom. Classic black and white tiles have been introduced, creating a mid-century atmosphere. For the vanity, the decision to go black is noticeable, so elements like the vanity fittings and the sleek design really burst.
To make the room look refined, white bed linen with just a gray stripe are displayed in the bathroom. A chevron curtain continues the pattern mix in this modern guest bathroom. There are even sample pieces on the basket that are perfect for storing laundry and towels.
The master bedroom is the ultimate retreat for the parent of a young child. “My husband, daughter and I use the house on weekends all year round to chat and relax together.” And this bedroom is the ultimate cozy space with white walls and black moldings throughout the house, but warm woods too. The wooden bed with clear, neutral bed linen ensures that things feel cozy and refined, without a fuss.
Above the bed, a colorful photo is a whimsical nod to the fact that it is actually a beach house. “We made sure that the house didn’t feel like a beach house. The beaches and water surround us and the area speaks for itself. So we wanted to create a cool bohemian vibe that compliments the magic of Montauk. “
Everything about this home goes back to the couple’s desire – to have a space that feels modern, refreshed, and fits their family perfectly. With the help of Décor Aid, they were able to achieve this. It’s a beautiful home where they can really spend time together.
