Named “The Hottest Hotel in City” by Vanity Fair, the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel opened on Michigan Avenue in May. For over 120 years, the Athletic Association was a men-only club staffed by Chicago’s elite. The elegant 1893 Venetian Gothic-style building had been closed since 2007 and was uncertain until it was bought by Geolo Capital (Commune Hotels & Resorts) in 2012 and AJ Capital Partners converted this former boys’ club into one of the most sought-after hotels in town. The design was created by Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture and Roman and Williams and pays homage to the history of the building. At the same time, the designers made it feel modern and new by combining elaborate turn-of-the-century architectural details with vintage and custom-made items that hark back to the hotel’s sporty past.

Leather club chairs
Is there anything that says Gentlemen’s Club more than leather armchairs? (Note the vintage boxing gloves on the bench.)
